About Working at a Small Web Design Company
For people who don’t know me that well, or even those that do, I work at a small web design company in Syracuse. By small I mean size, it’s only a handful of people, but it is the 2nd biggest web design company in Syracuse by clients.
I work here as a designer, and also as lead RIA (rich internet application I.E. Flash) developer. So after 3 months here are some of my feelings.
-I need to focus more on going freelance.
-My designs are too “artsy”, in otherwords they don’t look like cookie cutter bullshit which is most of what we pump out.
-Some of my superiors don’t actually understand what the work I do entails. I have had 50 hour projects cut 15 hours and 1500 lines of code in because the bosses decide, hey we already have something built that uses 5 year old code, is out dated, and looks like shit. Lets use that instead!
As far as I am concerned, working here is good. It’s a good job, it’s good practice, im doing things I enjoy (for the most part). I just feel like im stuck inside of a creative box. Everyone here is old fashioned, and very technical, thats a good thing. Our websites are secure they pass compliance, and they do there job (sometimes). In the end though they are boring, uninspired, and downright mediocre.
The practice is good, now to put it to use.
